I like me some metal, but why is it important for playing metal to do that face...the one where it looks like you are trying to poop out 50 powerbars from your ears? Is that a requirement?

Just part of the genre I suppose. I played drums in a metal-ish band in high school and in photos I’ve seen of myself playing, I made some pretty weird faces.
